Vienna's brick, from Church Street to the subdivisions
Vienna is a town of two brick eras. Along Maple Avenue and the older streets near the town center, you find mid-century brick ramblers and colonials — solid homes whose mortar is now reaching the age where repointing makes sense. In the newer infill neighborhoods, larger brick-front homes went up in the last twenty years, and their chimneys and veneer are starting to show the first signs of weather wear. We work on both, and the approach is different for each.
The older Vienna brick — 1950s through 1970s — is often excellent clay brick with lime-rich mortar that has simply worn down. These walls are prime repointing candidates: the brick has decades left, the mortar needs renewing. We match the mortar type to the era, not just the color, so the repair lasts instead of damaging the brick.
What Vienna homes need most
Chimney work tops the list. Vienna's brick colonials have prominent chimneys that take full weather exposure, and we see a lot of cracked crowns, worn mortar, and spalling in the upper courses. A chimney rebuild from the roofline up is one of our most common Vienna jobs — it solves the problem for decades at a fraction of full-rebuild cost.
Patios and walkways are second. Vienna lots are generous by close-in standards, and homeowners invest in outdoor living — paver patios, brick walks, seat walls. Our clay soil means base preparation is everything here; we build the full compacted base so patios stay level through freeze-thaw cycles.
